Then review the available inspection and complaint-related documents, ask the home about anything unclear, and contact the appropriate state or Ombudsman office when you need help.

Use the official California facility search

Open the California Community Care Facility Search. California’s Community Care Licensing Division licenses Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly and conducts inspections for compliance with licensing standards.

Match the right facility

Care homes can have similar names, and a business name may differ from the name families hear in conversation. Confirm:

• Facility name
• Street address and city
• License number
• Facility type
• Licensed capacity
• Current license status shown in the state record

If the address or license number does not match, do not assume the record belongs to the home. Ask the provider for the exact licensed name and number.

Review the most recent records first

Read the newest available inspection and related documents before older records. Note dates, the issue described, the regulation or requirement involved, what correction was required, and whether a follow-up record is available.

One document rarely tells the entire story. Look for patterns, repeated concerns, severity, and evidence of correction. Records may not reflect changes that happened after the latest posted document.

Questions to ask the care home

• Can you explain what happened and when?
• What was changed to correct the problem?
• How do you monitor the correction today?
• Were staff retrained or procedures changed?
• May I see the current plan, policy, or documentation that applies?
