Families often use “personal care home” or “assisted living” as general descriptions for residential settings that help with everyday needs. Louisiana licenses Adult Residential Care Providers (ARCPs) at four levels. The level is important because it reflects the setting, services, and resident needs the provider is approved to serve.

The words used in an advertisement or directory listing do not prove that a home is licensed. Before choosing care, verify the facility through Louisiana’s official records and confirm that its license and approved services match the resident’s needs.

How Louisiana classifies residential care

These descriptions are a starting point, not a care assessment. Ask the home to explain exactly which services it is licensed and staffed to provide for the prospective resident.

How to verify a Louisiana home

Start with LDH Provider Directories, the official state licensing or facility-information resource maintained by Louisiana Department of Health (LDH), Health Standards Section.

  1. Search by the facility’s name, address, city, or license number.
  2. Confirm that the legal or licensed name and address match the home you are considering.
  3. Review the license type, current status, capacity, and any specialties, endorsements, qualifications, or service limitations shown.
  4. Open available inspection, survey, deficiency, complaint, or enforcement records. If records are not posted, ask the regulator how to request them.
  5. Ask the home to explain anything that appears missing, expired, inconsistent, or unresolved, and recheck the record close to move-in.

State databases can change and may not show every recent event immediately. Save or print the record you reviewed, and confirm material details directly with the regulator and the home before signing an agreement.

Questions to ask before choosing a home

Visit in person when possible. Observe cleanliness, food, staff interaction, accessibility, noise, resident engagement, and whether the setting feels safe and respectful. A directory page, website, or telephone conversation cannot replace an in-person review.

Complaints, resident advocacy, and urgent concerns

LDH publishes complaint instructions and contact information for Adult Residential Care Providers. See the LDH Health Standards complaint page for the current process and contact information.

The Louisiana Governor’s Office of Elderly Affairs provides independent resident advocacy and can help residents or families understand rights and work to resolve concerns in long-term-care settings.

Suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation of a vulnerable adult should be reported through the appropriate state or local protective-services channel. If someone is in immediate danger or needs emergency help, call 911.

How to use this directory

PersonalCareHomes.net is an independent directory, not a placement agency, health care provider, licensing authority, or legal service. A listing does not mean that we verified, endorsed, or recommended the home. Information may come from public records or the provider and can become outdated.

Use the directory to identify possible homes, compare the information available, and use listed contact options. Then independently verify licensing, services, staffing, availability, pricing, and suitability before making a decision.
